About Sonder Jazz
Our Story
Sonder Jazz was formed in 2019 by three local Rochester musicians from Houghton University. With a shared love for jazz, faith and music, they aim to bring old and new flavors to jazz.

Jerbrel Bowens
Jerbrel Bowens started drumming at the age 2, and music has been a part of his life ever since. Teaching his students about music is also another passion of his. Jerbrel Bowens is also a composer who offers a unique style to marching band arrangements all the way to concert band literature. Jerbrel also serves as member of the Dream Cymba
Jerbrel Bowens started drumming at the age 2, and music has been a part of his life ever since. Teaching his students about music is also another passion of his. Jerbrel Bowens is also a composer who offers a unique style to marching band arrangements all the way to concert band literature. Jerbrel also serves as member of the Dream Cymbal and Gong educator collective group, and he serves as the marching band director of the Webster high school marching band after he serves at School of the Arts in Rochester NY.

Melissa is a lover of all things jazz, bossa, and improv. Though trained as a concert pianist, she was smitten by jazz at the age of 15. Starting on piano, she learned the inner-workings of jazz, which then carried into her singing. She has previous training in opera/classical voice from Eastman, and now trains there in jazz vocals.

On the side, Melissa is a social worker and coordinator at the Center 4 Hope.

Although Jerome is an enthusiast of many styles of music, jazz holds a special place in his heart when it comes to performing. Jerome is originally a self taught pianist who started playing as early as three. Jerome has played and written for many different chamber and big band groups. Currently Jerome is pursuing a Ph.D. in Music Theory
Although Jerome is an enthusiast of many styles of music, jazz holds a special place in his heart when it comes to performing. Jerome is originally a self taught pianist who started playing as early as three. Jerome has played and written for many different chamber and big band groups. Currently Jerome is pursuing a Ph.D. in Music Theory from the Eastman School of Music. There, he hopes to also dabble in some jazz theory as he hopes to improves his jazz piano chops.
